"Bandaged her up, put some ointment on and...ran a blood test,"
stated Keto, turning round and putting some emphasis on the final
four words. Rufus hesitated a moment.
"You...mean she did this to herself?" he asked.
"Well, unless there was an invisible person with her fingerprints
in this room, who managed to escape without anyone seeing and really,
really wanted her to die...then yes, I'd say so," said Keto.
"Will she be all right?"
"That depends," said Keto, pointing to a medibunk. Rufus slowly
took a seat on it. "Firstly, we need to get some of what's in your
blood vessels into hers. WILDFLOWER!"
"Yes?" asked Wildflower, peering into the office, then seeing
Rufus, "Oh, thank goodness you came!"
"Less talk...in fact, no talk," growled Keto, "Set up a transfusion
and then go find the Tree."
Wildflower opened her mouth as if to say something, then scowled at
Keto and quickly attached the apparatus to Rufus, then to Amber's
still-unconscious form. With a final glare, she scurried off to find
the Big Pink Tree.
"And secondly," said Keto, after checking she was out of earshot.
"Secondly? There's something else?" asked Rufus, lying on the
medibunk.
"Yes, there's a secondly," sighed Keto, "I assume you know what the
secondly is, too."
There was a long pause.
"You know, don't you?" asked Rufus.
"I'm the Chief Medical Officer. I ran a blood test. What do you
think?"
"I think you know."
"You think right."
Rufus sighed.
"I tried to stop her."
"Oh, you did stop her," nodded Keto, "And for what it's worth, I
think you had the right idea. The only problem is, you didn't
realise quite how hard the withdrawal would hit her. My advice,
though I hate to say it, is to make sure she's able to talk to
someone about this. Even if it's..."
Keto swallowed, but forced the word out.
"...Cerebrum."
"WHAT!?" yelled Rufus, almost tearing out the tubing, "ARE YOU
INSANE?"
"You'd prefer, maybe, a mutated appendix?" asked Keto. That
stopped Rufus in his tracks.
"...what about the new psychiatrist?" he asked, "Holly said there
was another one on board now."
"Really?" mused Keto, perking up a little, "I wonder if they've met
Cerebrum yet...that could be interesting...but yes, if you'd prefer.
Either way, she needs to be able to talk to somebody about this.
Otherwise, she might not be able to cope with it, and this kind of
thing could happen again. And we don't want that, do we?"
Rufus turned to look at Amber, lying on the medibunk and looking
very pale, with bloodstained bandages round her wrists.
"No," he said, "No, we don't."
