Cerebrum joined the chase, followed by his lawyer. "I could have told you
that no good could possibly come from allowing future versions of people on
board this ship. Do you have any idea how badly we could mess up the time
stream?"
"You idiot, this is the present, nothing we do could possibly affect us
here," Jay shouted back.
"If I recall correctly, two people on board this ship aren't, as a matter of
fact, from the present. They are, as a matter of fact, from the future.
You've put their very existance as space-time objects at risk. Now who's the
idiot?"
Before Jay could respond, two shots rang out from ahead of them, and Rufus
spun and fell to the ground, bleeding from superficial wounds in his
shoulder and right leg. A man wearing a trench coat and holding a smoking
gun was standing in front of him. Behind him were several men wearing shiny,
black body armor.
The man flashed a badge. "Dick Reccard," he snapped. "Time Jogger. I'm from
the Time Crime Investigation Section, the men behind me are from the SWAT
division of the TCIS. You're under arrest for one count of 234.5, use of an
unauthorized time machine; severals counts of 123.4, interacting with
temporals neutrals and letting them know you're from future; and count zero,
attempting to change history. Sergeant, read him his rights."
One of the men behind him stepped forward, took out a piece of paper, looked
at it and said. "You have no rights," then stepped back.
"Thank you sergeant. All right, scum, how do you plead?" Dick demanded,
aiming his pistol between Rufus' eyes.
"Are you from the STCP?" Jay asked, coming to a stop.
"Never heard of it," Dick replied. "The TCIS is the only time crime unit in
existence."
"No it isn't," Jay replied, then Cerebrum tapped him on the shoulder.
"Remember what I told you about changing history? I presume that the STCP no
longer exists now, due to time stream changes. Fortunately, I've also
hypothesized that anybody who isn't in their time locale of origin will
remain unaffected. So that means Zack and Cubie shouldn't be affected."
