Checking Out
Who: Katrina Swete
Where: The corridor outside the drive room
When: Just after Alota passed out
-------------------------------------
Katrina limped over to the unconscious Alota and looked down at her.
Normally, Katrina would have done something, but seeing as she was probably
in the worst mood of her life, she simply stepped over Alota and told the
doors to open. They did without problem.
Allie sat where White Wolf should have been, but Katrina could have cared
less who was there. She practically dragged her useless leg over to Allie and
handed her a piece of paper. "My resignation," Katrina said.
"Resignation?" Allie gasped. "You're quitting? Why?"
"I have many reasons," Katrina answered blankly. "Will you give that to White
Wolf whenever he gets back?"
"Shouldn't you wait till he returns?"
Katrina shrugged. "I should, shouldn't I? But I'm not going to. What's the
worst that's going to happen to me if I just leave? The big, bad JMC is going
to come after me? I have the means to take them on and win." Katrina was
talking about the money she had, but, of course, Allie didn't know about it.
"I've got a shuttle back to Earth waiting for me in the landing bay."
"But we were just attacked! How did a shuttle make it by without being
destroyed? And how come it landed without anyone giving it permission?" Allie
asked surprisedly. This was too much news to deal with.
"The shuttle has a cloaking ability," Katrina explained, feeling ready to
leave and hating the annoyance of having to explain herself. "And I gave it
permssion to land. Don't ask how; that's one of the many secrets I'm taking
with me." Katrina had bribed some people.
"That must have cost a furtune!" Allie gasped. She shook her head. She had
more important things to do than try to stop someone who couldn't be stopped.
"Sounds like nothing is going to keep you from leaving. Well then, I guess
this is good-bye. Good luck, Katrina."
"Good-bye, Allie." Katrina turned to leave, but quickly turned back. "Sorry,
I almost forgot. I got you a wedding present. I left it in your quarters and
an address to send the 'Thank You!' card when you open it."
With one last quick look around, Katrina left the drive room and stepped over
Alota again as she limped to the landing bay. The men from the shuttle had
already brought her stuff down, including the PITAs, and they were waiting
for her. She made quite good time, and was soon seated comfortably in the
padded chairs of the shuttle, waiting to take off, which didn't take long.
Allie was right: this had cost her a fortune.
(Don't worry people, Katrina's not really leaving. Or is she? Tune in
tomorrow! Wait, if I'm posting tomorrow, doesn't that mean I'm definitely
going to be back? Smeg, I gave it away!)
