"I still love you, I do, Seymour," she sobbed into his shirt. "But you're
always leaving me, and I hate it. If you leave me behind again, I won't be
here when you get back."
She peeled herself off his shirt, which was now quite damp, and wiped her
eyes on her sleeve.
"What can I do?" he asked.
"You have to promise to marry me, tonight," she began, "and in your vows you
must swear that you won't leave me behind, on this ship, again, even if you
must take me with you. If you can't do that, then I will leave you. I can't
risk being without you again."

Seymour felt the pain in his heart (and wasn’t thinking about how Katrina’s
tears might have stained his expensive shirt -honest) she wanted him to
promise. But for someone who holds dignity, truth and honour with as high
regard as Seymour did, he knew that once he had given his word he had to
stick by it.
“But Katrina….. a promise is a very powerful thing….”
She wiped a tear away. “I know, and I know that if you promise- you’ll mean
it.”
Seymour thought long and hard, moments seemed to drag forever. “But you have
to understand I have a very active job… I’m an Ambassador now. And that
doesn’t just mean making cups of tea for foreign dignitaries once in a
while, I have to travel many places, meet new people and negotiate with
them. The Queen has trusted me with this honoured position. With one call I
might be ordered to go and stop an attack by an alien race by reasoning with
them, my duty is to keep the peace in the name of the Queen…well not this
Queen, she couldn’t really give a damn, but in the name of the royal
tradition. This queen’s just interested in reading exciting Blue Dwarf
reports about aliens and invasion…I make most of them up usually just to
please her and keep me in a job. I asked her why she couldn’t just read a
comic….”
“Screw the bloody Queen!” Katrina shouted in tears.
“Well she offered in fact, but I declined because I love you.” He put his
arms on hers but she brushed him away.
“So you’re saying you can’t promise to me?”
“Well I’d love to Katrina, I really would because I really do love you.
Which is why I can’t even take you on missions with me, it could be
dangerous and I could never put a girl in danger.” He paused. “Honestly, I
do love you.” he said forcefully into her eyes so that he knew she would
believe him but she looked away, hurting so much that she couldn’t bare
looking into his eyes anymore.
“If you love me, then why can’t you prove it? I wanted you to marry me.” She
forced the words out trying to keep the sobbing sensation in the back of her
throat at bay.
Seymour felt so bad, saying these words were like throwing daggers at her.
But it needed to be said. “You’re asking me to give up too much. I have an
important job and need to travel, I can’t just settle down and let the
universe come to me. I’m doing this for the good of everyone, not just for
my own salary or reputation which some people think, and not for the greedy
Mining corporation or Space Core. Its for the well being of the entire human
race, we’re anticipating an attack from the Hymenoptera any time…”
He glanced out of the window and saw a spider-shaped Hymenoptera fighter
ship shoot a large sticky beam of web at a Starbug.
…”Actually we’re under attack by them right now… And basically as much as I
want to, I can’t give up the universe for you. I’m not ready for that kind
of commitment right now.”
“I can’t marry you right now.” The posh Englishman gulped, expecting another
beating from the flowers.
