Who: Zack & Cubie
Where: McDonald's
When: Just after White Wolf departed.
Zack looked down at himself. "You know, suddenly I feel very silly in
this uniform."
Cubie bit her tongue trying not to completely deflate her husband.
Zack sighed, then shrugged, smiled, and dunked a McNugget (TM) into his
barbecue sauce. Popping it into his mouth, he unbuttoned his collar. "You
know, I'm glad. I need a break."
Cubie frowned. "A break from what?"
Zack winked at her. "Why, the pressures of command, of course!"
"WHAT?!"
Zack leaned back in his chair. "Yes, it was daunting. The lives of
everyone aboard hinged on my every whim. If I'd had the wrong thing for
breakfast, we could all have died."
Cubie couldn't believe her ears. "Oh, please. Your flatulence is
pretty bad, but hardly life-threatening."
Zack laughed. "Hey! That's classified!"
Cubie sighed. "Unfortunately, I have clearance and a need to know."
Zack finished off his McNuggets (TM) and rose. Unbuttoning his JMC
commander's tunic, he draped it over his shoulder and sported a black
t-shirt with a 'McKenzie's' logo on the back. "Sanitation officer . . . I
like the sound of that."
Cubie cocked an eyebrow, worried at the ease with which Zack was taking
his career change. "Are you sure about this?"
Zack winked at her again. "I'm in familiar waters again, my dear.
Remember my janitorial position at Macy's in New York?"
Cubie groaned. "Ugh! They fired you, Zack!"
Zack grinned. "Ah! But this time I KNOW that I need to read the
warning labels on the bottles of cleaners before mixing them."
Cubie sighed. "Oh, what the heck." She shimmered, then reappeared in
coveralls. "Let's clean up this place!"
Zack hooted. "Yeah, baby!"
The pair headed back to their quarters to get Zack into something more
appropriate for their new job, then sought out White Wolf. They found him
in the Drive Room. The rest of the Drive Room crew eyed Zack nervously, but
relaxed when they saw his new uniform.
The hamster nodded to them. "I take it that you've decided to accept
my offer."
Zack saluted, nearly knocking himself senseless with the handvac he was
holding. Cubie shook her head, fighting to hide the grin. "Yes, Commander.
We're happy to take you up on the job."
=====
Zack and Cubie peered in the door, their faces scrunched in disgust.
"I wonder if it's too late to reconsider?"
The toilet burbled at them. A single gray tentacle shot up from the
bowl, waved lazily, then slowly descended out of sight.
Cubie blinked. "What was THAT?!"
She looked over at Zack. "Zack?"
Zack was hunched over their cleaning cart. "Now I KNOW I saw something
here just for that."
Cubie divided her attention between her husband and the toilet,
wondering which one was more worthy of her concern.
