Damn right he wasnt.
5 minutes earlier.
Jay, sombre faced as was the norm these days pulled another pint of
Stella (OOC..mmm...stella.........
......SHIT! the post!)
One eye on the bar one on the TV that was showing the race, Parrots
was SMEGGIN busy, as it always was around Christmas.
The race was being commentated by Holly, who kept reffering to Efof
as Dean..who wasnt even racing, in true Murray Walker stylee. In fact
he'ed even adopted Murray's face for the race.
Jay hadnt been paying too much attention to the proceedings until he
heard the words BLack and HOle in the same sentence. He started to
watch intently.
"Bestrom seems to have ran into some trouble, hes being pulled of
course, could be something to do with the smeggin humoungous black
hole" Holly said "This could cost him the lead"
Jay slappped his forehead, was Holly really that dumb?! Sod costing
him the lead, it could cost him his LIFE!
Luckily, Efof was closing in, he'd pull Kayn to safety with a
towline. "Deans closing in" said Holly, still calling Efof Dean.
Jay didnt see what happened next, he was made to pour a double JD and
Slurm for one of Harris' goons, when he looked back at the TV, he
could see that in attempts to resuce Kayn, every single competitor in
the race had been pulled in to the black hole.
Dean, the only other Blue Dwarf pilot left was nowhere to be seen,
unknown to Jay he was outside cutting L'ontar down from a lampost.
Owen spoke "Damn, I hope someone does something, or were gonna get us
some DEAD pilots" Jay didnt respond.
"Ah well" owen said again "Much as i wanna see em get otta there,
thats something for the officers to worry about, now get doen here
Jay, we got customers wanting drinks"
again no response,
"Jay?" nothing
"JAY?" owen turned around, Jay was nowhere in sight, Dean however was
walking in, oblivious to the pilot's plight.
NOW
The TV screen in Parrots, showed the Pilotsd burning out their
engines trying to escape the pull of black hole, but another starbug
was approaching fast, recklessly fast, THe 'bug suddnely changed
direction, moving parrele with the trapped vessles, but at a distance
enough to be able to pull away form the Black Hole, mulitple tow-
lines fired, latching onto to the trapped vessels, Kayn, Efof, Mike,
and the others suddenly found their ships moving, carried by the
momentum of the newcomer.
Once to safety Kayn opened a comm line to the new vessel "Dean
Thomas? that you?"
"Naaaaaah" came the voice of the pilot "I'm WAY better looking!"
"JAY?!"
"Who were you expecting?! Santa Claus?!" Jay replied "Now if you dont
mind, I've got a race to win!"
With that Jay fired up the afterburners and soared off into the
distance following the course he and AKyn have drawn up before he
quit his job. Through the asteroid field, double back and into the
atmosphere of a nearby planet. Kayn gained a lead on Jay at this
point. as did Lomaz and Mike. They were movng at an incredicle rate
over the surface of an ocean, Jay dissapeared form sight.
"Has he chickend out?" Kayn asked, Then found himself puilling up
suddenly as Jays ship soared upwards oput of the water in fron of
him, where he led the way all the way back to the Blue Dwarf.
Jay had won, the guy, not even in the race, had won.
Disembarking from the Starbug he turned to Kayn.
"Hear you got a vacancy?!"
"Welcome back..Lt. Cmdr."
Later.
Alota, unaware of the nights proceeding so far returned home, she
wasnt looking foraward to another night of Jays depression.
The door hissed open.
The first thing she saw was that the dinin table had been decorated
with candles, Jay emerged from the kitchen, dressed in a
suit...something that she never expected to see since the wedding.
He smiled, and pulled out a chair from the table for her. Sitting
opposite her at the table he called into the kitchen, Geoff the
skutter appeared with a meal that Jay had managed to convince La
Regal's head chef to cook for him. Jay took ALotas hand. "Honey...I'm
sorry...I've been a jerk, I blamed myself for something I couldnt do
anything about. But getting back in the air earlier and saving KAyn
and the others made me see it all clearly. I'm a pilot again, and the
guy you married is back"
Alota smiled.
Jay's face dropped, as thoguh he suddenley returned to his depression
"WAHTS THE MATTER?!" his wife asked, concerned
Jay replied with "I CANT BELIEVE I SOLD THE PHOENIX!!!!"
