For a while Keto just floated there. In the back of his mind a
little conversation was taking place.
1: "Your lab coat is going to be ruined. Push her away."
2: "Ye gods man, are you not human? She's obviously distraught and
in extreme emotional pain! Comfort her!"
3: "I agree, the young woman is evidently suffering from..."
1: "Look, nobody cares what you two think, who's the dominant trait
here, hmm?"
2: "Have a little compassion!"
1: "I have a little compassion. You're little. That's why I rule."
3: "...caused by an imbalance of..."
2: "You know, Ego, I never liked you much, but that's okay."
1: "If you'd stop thinking about others so much you'd see how great
we could be."
3: "...the treatment would be..."
1+2: "SHUT UP CLINICALITY!"
3: "..."
2: "At least give the poor woman her job back, it's the least she
deserves."
1: "Oh yes? And how would that help me?"
2: "Always you you you...look, if you give her her job back,
perhaps Phil WON'T beat you to a pulp the next time he sees you."
1: "..."
2: "Well?"
1: "...good point."
Keto coughed, clearing his throat. Tara looked up.
"Miss Cleavage..." murmured Keto, "Perhaps...I was a little hasty
in my decision..."
Inside Keto's head, the little personality trait that made up Pride
was screaming in agony.
"...and so..." continued Keto through semi-gritted teeth as Tara's
eyes filled with what might have passed for hope, "...I agree to take
you back onto the medical staff..."
Unable to contain itself any longer, Compassion gave Keto's mind an
almighty shove.
"...as Deputy Medical Officer," said Keto, and almost bit his
tongue as soon as the words had fallen out of his mouth.
