Bridging the Gap
Who: Eve, Amber, Rufus and Chris.Where: Tara's quartersWhen: During the Halloween party---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The question circled around in her mind, she did need to stay awake and she did want to make some friends... 'Your a bit late for the party, so I was wondering, would..... ummm, would you..... arh..... wouldyouliketocomein?' Eve said it so quickly she wasn't sure it made sense, she wasn't game enough to repeat it, so she just waited for an answer.....---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris ran the sentence through his head.He knew what she'd said, "Would you like to come in?", but he was wondering if he'd imagined it and took a little moment to register it in his brain. After ruling out imagination, Chris decided to accept the offer."Sure." he said as Eve directed him to the couch and closed the door."Who's kids?" Asked Chris, almost certain that there was no babies on the ship."Tara's." Said Eve, sitting down beside Chris."Tara's?" Asked Chris. He didn't even know Tara was pregnant, even though the rest of the ship did. "Whoa, she keeps a good secret."
"Huh?"
"Never mind.
"Oh."
There was an awkward silence for a second until Eve broke the ice.
"Um... Would you like something to drink?"
"That'd be great." Said Chris, starting to feel a bit less nervous.
Eve walked over to a food dispenser then turned to Chris, "What would you like?" She asked.
"Uh... Whatever you're getting would be fine." Chris said with a smile. He really didn't have a clue on what to drink and decided to leave it up to Eve to make a decision.
Eve made a selection and was promptly greeted with a burst of sparks from the keypad.
"Ah, crap. It's broken." Said Eve.
"Just a sec," said Chris, getting up off the couch and walking over to help Eve, "I'll have it fixed in a jiffy."
"Um, I don't think you should..."
"Relax... it's my job..." Chris said. He paused, nervously before putting some black gloves on, and pulling the cover off the machine.
Another burst of sparks flew out of the machine and instinctively he used his trench coat to protect Eve.
When the sparks stopped being flung into the room, Chris quickly turned and fiddled with the circuitry.
He replaced the cover on the vending machine and turned, producing two drinks on a platter and bowing like a magician after a performance, his coat acting as his cape.
"Here you go." Said Chris, handing Eve her drink.
"How did you know which drink I ordered?"
"The order was saved in the machine's memory."
"Right." Eve smiled.
The two had only just sat down again before the crying of the twins could be heard in the next room.
"I guess the sparks woke them up." Said Eve.
Realising that the twins should be comforted back to sleep, both Eve and Chris got up and collected the twins.
Sitting them down on the lounge, Chris had an idea.
"Hey, I know! You take Rufus and Amber and I'll give them a magic show."
"How? Do you know magic?"
"No, just watch..." Said Chris, leaving the seat and putting the black gloves on again. He kneeled on the floor in front of the three and began to touch his fingers together. Tiny blue sparks jumped between his fingertips. "It's the left-over charge from the machine" Said Chris making a performance of it, almost like playing a musical instrument.
The twins stopped crying and started giggling softly. Their giggling sent them silently to sleep again.
"Let's put them back to bed" Said Eve, "But take the gloves off."
"It's ok, I've used up the charge anyway" Said Chris, putting the gloves back into his pocket and picking up one of the twins.
"You know, I've had a great time already."
Eve looked at Chris puzzled, "But the vender blew up!"
"And I fixed it. But that doesn't matter. What really matters is that I'm getting to know you. I'd really like to get to know you better." Said Chris, getting that old nervous feeling again.
OOC: Your reaction, Eve. I like the sound of a walk, but I need your decision first. :)
