After giving Vanessa some magazines to read, Nurse
Coffey looked from one Cerebrum to another and was
becoming very confused. Aside from very small
differences, at a glance they looked alike. One
Cerebrum was well enough but even she couldn't handle
_this_many! In fact, all these incidences of doubles,
clones, and alternate selves was getting to be a bit
much. For one thing, it kept reminding her that her
sweetheart, Dr. Shakespeare, was split into two
selves, one the original Larry Trisees, and both were
stored in stasis. Up til now no cure had been
established for their condition, a terrible case of
sub-atomic instability and deterioration. All the
doubles running around merely brough that into mind
again and again.
"Um, Cerebrum?"
"Yes?" said a chorus of eight identical voices.
Hazel sighed. "Just the Blue Dwarf Cerebrum. In
private. Other Cerebrums, help yourself to the teapot,
coffeepot, and the box of doughnuts."
As the other Cerebrum's converged on the Medibay's
teabreak table, the BD Cerebrum trotted up to Coffey.
"Yes?" he repeated.
Grabbing him by the lapel, she dragged him around a
corner.
"Ow, what's this all about? Are you experiencing an
anxiety attack? Paranoid episode?"
"No. Well, maybe a small panic attack but...just
listen to me. It's very nice that you brought all your
alternate self type friends aboard but they're too
many of them here at once. And I can't tell them
apart. Now all of you are going to have to wear
nametags or sticky labels or forehead tattoos so I can
tell you apart. Okay?"
"Nametags are fine," said Cerebrum, inwardly
shuddering at the forehead tattoo idea.
"And maybe they could take turns sleeping at different
times so there's less of them present at once."
The BD Cerebrum nodded. "We'll consider that."
"Good."
When they returned around the corner, they found
Wildflower had set up a game of Monopoly and the
Cerebrums were arguing over the psychological
implications of which piece one picked to be.
"Really, what is it with this Medibay and Monopoly?"
said Hazel in an exasperated tone.
"You're beginning to sound like Keto, you know?" said
the original BD Cerebrum.
Coffey glared and frowned.
"See?" he added.
