Slowly, Keto opened his eyes, then groggily shut them again.
"I think he's awake," said a voice.
"Don't be stupid, his eyes are still closed," said the same voice.
"Aha, that obviously indicates a synaptic response, despite his
lack of consciousness," said the same voice a third time, "It *must*
be multiple personalities!"
"Cerebrum...s..." murmured Keto.
"Yes?" said several voices in unison.
"Get out of my medibay."
"Amazing," murmured one Cerebrum. Keto didn't bother to open his
eyes to find out which one. "The multiple personality evidently
believes it exerts some control over this area..."
"I am going to count to three," said Keto in a low voice, "And then
I am going to open my eyes. And if one of you, ANY one of you, is
still here when I do so, then I will take great pleasure in having
you psychoanalyse cold vacuum. Is that clear?"
"Interesting..."
"One."
"...possibly a subconscious matrix of..."
"Two."
"...which would seem to indicate that..."
"Three," said Keto, and opened his eyes. Slowly, he sat up, and
his jaw dropped.
"You're ALL still HERE!" he yelped. The Cerebrum's turned to look
at him.
"He seems surprised," said one.
"Do you think perhaps he is waking up?" asked another.
"WILDFLOWER!" screamed Keto, swinging his legs over one side of the
medibunk and standing up, clasping his hands to his ears, "DEAL WITH
THIS!"
Turning to walk towards the other side of the medibay, Keto nearly
walked into L'ontar. He frowned.
"I know you..." he murmured. L'ontar coughed.
"Yes," he began, "I..."
"You're that half-GELF, aren't you?"
"...yes," murmured L'ontar, slowly. Keto seemed about to continue,
but stopped and instead asked, "And what, prey...sorry, pray...are
you doing in my medibay?"
"I want to speak to Dr Cerebrum," said L'ontar.
"WILDFLOWER!" yelled Keto as he walked swiftly onwards, "DEAL.
NOW."
There was the sound of a shoe hitting a body, and then a thud.
"What is an unconscious man doing on the floor, rather than a
medibay?" asked Keto quietly, his face still pressed against the
floor.
There was a ringing silence as everybody tried to suppress comments
like, "Well, not a lot really."
Keto grunted, climbed to his feet, and heaved Armer upright. As he
did so, he got a whiff of the man's breath, and nearly ended up
horizontal again.
"An extreme case of alcohol poisoning, I'd take an incredibly-well-
educated-guess," he said, "Coffey, if you wouldn't mind..."
Keto and Coffey manhandled Armer onto a nearby medibunk, then Keto
sighed.
"Time to go check on the patient," he said, walking towards the
operating theatre. "Well," he continued as he pushed open the
doors, "At least nothing more can go wr...*pause*...*longer
pause*...Miss Chrysler...wake up, Miss Chrysler...WAKE UP!"
Vanessa, who had been lightly dozing in the chair beside the now-
empty surgical recovery bed, woke up with a start, nearly falling of
her chair.
"Miss Chrysler...where is your brother?" asked Keto quietly.
Vanessa stared at the empty bed.
"Umm...he's...uhh..."
"You don't know, do you?" sighed Keto. Vanessa hung her head.
"No."
"I'm not really surprised," muttered Keto to himself, "I should be,
but really I'm not. Right. Fine. Chrysler...you stay here, in case
the wandering blood clot should happen to flow back here. In the
meantime, I suppose I should go and find out where he is. It's not
exactly a boost for my reputation if creatures I heal die not long
after. Even if it IS a Chrysler."
"Well, look at it like this," said Vanessa philosophically, "You
healed him so well that he just got up and walked out! Walked out,
straight past me...and Coffey...and Wildflower...and you..."
Her voice trailed off under Keto's glare.
"So, I'll just stay here, then?"
