Medibay Under Attack
(damn, what happened to my enigmatic titles? That one's positively
boring!)
Who: Keto, Tree, Coffey, Wildflower, Vanessa, Tria (briefly), random
medibay patients, whole host of Eniram
Where: Medibay
When: 16:03 (look, is anybody going to be able to prove me wrong?)
================
Keto walked down the corridor, feeling oddly cheerful.
Sure, the ship was under attack by the Eniram. Sure, they were
crashed on a planet in an ocean when they should be in space. But,
now, at last, he was back on board and able to go back to his nice,
safe medib...
There was a crash from up ahead. Keto froze.
"I have a bad feeling about this..." he growled, clenching his
fists and stalking onwards.
The door to the medibay was buckled, as if something inside had hit
it at great speed. Keto blinked, and walked up to it, palming
the 'open' button.
"WHAT IS GOING ON IN H..." he began.
"...ERE!?" he ended, at floor level. His body, registering the
harpoon flying straight for his eyes, had taken it upon itself to
duck. Keto muttered something and dragged himself inside.
The medibay staff had toppled over several medibunks, and they and
the mobile patients were clustered behind them, their backs to the
door. Across the medibay, the far wall had a smoking hole blown
through it, and a dozen or so Eniram were popping their heads out and
shooting harpoons into the medibunks. The medibay staff, in return,
were hurling ointment vials, jars, syringes, scalpels, anything they
could lay their hands on in the opposite direction.
So far it seemed to be a no-score draw.
"What's our situation, Chrysler?" growled Keto, crawling inside
while keeping his head down. Vanessa, one hand clutching a jar ready
for throwing, glanced behind her.
"Hi Charlie, we weren't expecting you ba..."
"Shut up and tell me how we're doing!"
"Not good," interrupted Coffey, ducking as a harpoon shot a little
too close to the barricade for comfort, "We're out of syringes and
other medical implements, and we're running low on ointments and
containers. I think we're going to run out of ammo before they do."
"Don't say that too loud!" hissed Keto, "If they know we're running
low, they'll charge us!"
"No, they already tried that," said Coffey, gesturing behind them.
Glancing back, Keto saw the reason for the buckling of the medibay
door - an Eniram was slumped against it, dead.
"What happened?" Keto asked.
"That one charged, but the Tree got in the way."
"Got in the way?"
"Well, he effectively pole-vaulted into the door."
Keto glanced up at the Tree, which was standing in a corner of the
room throwing things at the Eniram. Several harpoons were sticking
out of it, having no real effect. A couple of them were pinning it
to the wall, making it unable to move.
"Try the cupboard above the basin," directed Keto. Coffey shook
her head.
"We already have," she said, "Used all those ones up. And the ones
in the cupboard below the sink."
Keto suddenly went wide-eyed.
"Y...you used the ointments BELOW the sink!? How long ago?"
"What?"
"How long ago did you throw them? Quickly!"
"About ten minutes ago, I guess," said Coffey, frowning, "But what
does that have to do with anything?"
"Right, we need to finish this quickly!" said Keto, reaching into
his laboratory coat pocket and pulling out the empty jar that had
contained the Eniram-sleeping ointment. Hurling it at the hole,
causing the Eniram to duck inside for a moment, he jumped up and
leapt towards the Tree.
"Never thought I'd think an overgrown twig could be useful," he
muttered, yanking the harpoons pinning the Tree to the wall out.
*RUSTLE!*
"I don't care if it hurts! Get back over there!" snapped Keto,
shoving the Tree towards the barricade. As he dived after it,
however, one of the Eniram took a pot shot.
Keto tumbled to the ground behind the barricade, yelling partly in
pain, partly in shock.
"He shot my foot! He shot my BLOODY FOOT!"
Sure enough, an Eniram harpoon was sticking directly through Keto's
foot, piercing the standard-issue boots like so much tissue paper.
"Everyone, out now!" yelled Keto, pulling himself along with his
foot trailing behind him, "Into the corridor, quickly!"
The medibay staff, patients and Keto headed for the door. Just as
Keto was about to pass through it, however, Tria's face appeared on
the monitor next to the door frame.
"Dr Keto, I thought you should know, Tara's collapsed in her new
q..."
Tria was cut off as another harpoon came sailing across the room
and impaled itself in the monitor. Keto yelped as sparks and
shattered glass flew, and hurriedly dragged himself through the
doors, which awkwardly slid shut behind him.
"Twig, get yourself across this door!" ordered Keto, leaning up
against the wall, the corridor now packed with people. The Tree,
rustling confusedly, leant itself against the door.
"What ARE you doing?" asked Wildflower, as Keto rolled up his
sleeve and looked at his watch.
"You said ten minutes, right?" asked Keto, not looking up. Coffey
hesitated, then said, "Yes, that's right, I think..."
"Then everybody better get ready for..." began Keto.
There was a sudden feeling of pressure, and then the door which had
previously been buckled suddenly ballooned outwards, the Tree
creaking as it tried to hold back the sudden expansion. Then,
finally, the sound arrived.
The soundwaves alone almost shook the waiting crewmembers to
pieces. Several of them fell over. Gradually, the noise subsided.
Keto sighed.
"WHAT WAS THAT?" asked Coffey.
"THAT WAS THE OINTMENTS FROM UNDER THE SINK," replied Keto,
morosely, "THEY OBVIOUSLY MINGLED. WE'VE JUST LOST OUR MEDIBAY."
There was relative silence for a minute.
"WHEN DO YOU EXPECT THE RINGING NOISES TO STOP?" asked Wildflower.
"IF NOT IN THE NEXT HOUR, THEN NEVER," replied Keto, raising one
eyebrow, "MISS CLEAVAGE SURE CHOSE A PERFECT TIME TO FAINT...WHEREVER
SHE IS."
=============
OOC: Bad side - we've lost the medibay. Good side - so have the
Eniram. Further good side - Keto got shoot in the foot, which I'm
sure you'll all be overjoyed about. ;)
