Cracking up
"Get out of my head!" Dirk yelled in his empty room. He didn't know what was
happening to him. The best that he could guess, he was suffering from space
madness. But space madness was usually characterized by paranoia and not the
hearing of voices. The symptoms didn't fit the disease, but he knew that
something wasn't right with him. There had to be something that he could do.
Work. Work ususally took his mind off his normal troubles. It should work now.
In a flash he was headed towards his office in the science bay.
Inside his office, Dirk began to busy himself with several projects at once.
They were nothing in particular, due to the fact that there seemed to be nothing
needed on the ship or for some special mission for an away team. It was just
busy work. "If I don't have time to think about it, then it can't bother me."
He threw himself into measurements, graphs, theories and theorems, mathematical
equations, and the occasional can of beer.
"This is just another one of your problems," the voice returned. "You spend all
your time working on things that don't really interst you just to keep from
having to socialize with people. You should really try and get out and make
friends."
"For the love of GOD!, can't you just leave me alone for one damned day!? Just
one!?" Dirk dropped his tools(and his beer) as he sank to his knees on the
floor. "Just one day of peace and quiet is all I want!"
"I'm sorry, but I've been silent for way too long. It's now time that I spoke
up and said something. You need a change in your life."
"I don't need a change. I need you to leave me alone. My life is fine right
now. Except for, maybe, the fact that I'm out in the middle of space when I
hate space travel. Or the fact that I'm stuck in a dead-end position as
punishment. Or that I'm pretty much isolated from the rest of the crew by the
emotional wall that I've built up around myself. Or that I'm hearing voices in
my head. And what's worse is that I'm responding to them. But other than that,
my life's is jim-smeggin'-dandy. Now just leave me be!"
