trippy flashback

"It's not easy being green," Dirk sang as he sat alone in his room. The mass
consumption of alcoholic beverages did not help his mood as it normally would.
The fact of the matter was that he was depressed. Depression wasn't an
emotional state that Dirk liked very much because....well...it's depressing. He
could deal with being angry, upset, and even, on occasion, bored; but he
couldn't deal with being sad. It just wasn't one of the many things that made
Dirk Dirk.
"Didn't work, did it?" the voice chimed again. "I told you it wouldn't."
"Would you just shut the hell up! I don't need you hangin' 'round, whoever you
are! Just leave me the smeg alone!" Dirk stood up in an attempt to leave; but,
even thought the alcohol didn't get rid of his depression, it sure did get rid
of his balance and coordination. He fell onto the floor and passed out.

"I don't know why he has to be so bothersome. A boy his age should have a
better plan in life. Do you realize your son has made no attempt to seek an
education or a job for after his graduation? He'll go nowhere if he keeps this
up. I must say that he has a lot of potential, but he doesn't seem to want to
apply himself. With scores like these, he could pick any university in the
solar system to attend. Yet, he still just wants to sit around and do nothing."
"I'm sure you're just trying to do what you think is best for Dirk, Mr.
Matthews; but the decision is really up to him. I can't make him...."
"That's just the point, Dr. Bell. Your son has no discipline. He lacks focus
in his life. He has so many ideas of his own; and, yet, all he wants to do is
latch on to the achievments of others. Did you know that he claimed that he is
a direct descendant of the people who created the Swiss Army Knife? Imagine
that! The Swiss Army Knife."
"Well, actually, there is some evidence that does link the Bell name to..."
"Dr. Bell, please! Bell isn't even a Swiss name!..... All I'm saying is, I've
got many friends in both the JMC and Space Corps. I'm sure they'll take him in
and give him the discipline he needs. They'd love to have a mind like his. His
thesis on the merging of organic and synthetic polymers for use in building
materials is just the sort of thing they're looking for. Just think it over,
please, Dr. Bell."
