An internal monologue
As he walked down the corridor, Dirk felt a little odd, as though something were
missing. It had been a pretty busy day. First, he had gotten rid of that
Psychotic Bob, or whatever his name was, robot thing. Second, he had replaced
most of his clothes that were lost in the blast. Then, he had to push off a tab
for a bad beer(how good can beer that eats through counter tops taste?).
Finally, Dirk had almost gotten involved with something that could have been
extremely illegal. It wouldn't do him much good to lecture Phil on ethics in
science if he himself turned around and disobeyed them. Also, Dirk wasn't the
kind of guy to risk prison for someone else's hairbrained schemes. His own, of
course; but not someone else's.
"What could be missing?" he asked himself. The thought hit him. He had been so
busy that day that he hadn't taken his normal gaze into the crystal ball. The
realization made him feel weird and almost weightless. "I can go back to the
room now and make up for lost time." He began to journey back to his room when
another thought came to mind. `What about the John Wayne movie. I can't miss
that.`
*You can catch that thing anytime. The scutters show it four times a week,*
another voice inside his head told him.
`Maybe so, but why take a chance on missing the other three times when I know I
can catch it this time?`
*Because, even if you miss it, it won't really matter. You've already seen it
at least a hundred times. Besides, it's just John Wayne.*
Dirk seemed to get furious with himself. `JUST JOHN WAYNE! My grandfather
taught me that you can't be a red-blooded American and not like John Wayne! He
even told me that the constitution was amended to say so. Just John Wayne.
Huh.`
That seemed to make up his mind. People passing him in the hall paid little
attention to the man standing there with an angry look on his face while he
played out this little debate in his mind. He made his way to the cinema. But,
in a few moments, he was out again and back on his way to his room to stare into
his crystal ball.
