Christine\'s Diagnosis
"Sit down, Mrs. McKenzie," said Dr Keto, not turning around.
"What is it Dr. Keto?" asked Christine McKenzie, sitting down.
"It's regarding my previous diagnoses. I have run clinical tests and
it appears that..."
Keto hesitated. Even he, with his professed ability to clinically
ignore all niceties and get irritated for no apparent reason, didn't
like delivering bad news to his patients. Especially not bad news on
a catastrophic scale.
"It appears that what?" asked Christine, sounding somewhat
nervous. She had every right to be, thought Keto as he turned around.
"...I'm afraid that the influenza that we believed you had
contracted turned out to be something far more serious," he said
soberly. As Christine didn't say anything, merely looked at him
worriedly, Keto sighed and shook his head.
"I'm afraid, Mrs McKenzie," he said sadly, "That you have a form of
lung cancer."
Christine noticeably paled at this information, and for a moment
she just sat there. Keto shook his head again.
"I don't know what to say," he murmured truthfully, "It's
relatively small at present, which is why it was mistaken for
influenza. But it is there, without a doubt."
Silently, Christine looked up at him, and Keto forced himself to
turn away, facing his desk.
He was surprised at how difficult it was.
