Oh I gotta get this off me
Who - Sam, an innocent Toaster and a Gloop Mec
Where - The Recreation Room
Sam wandered down he dimly lit Corridor towards the Rec room. The drive core was pulsing its rhythmic whine as normal but Sam wasn't happy. Something was not as it should be, OK a few years had passed since his conviction but still the ship had a different feeling now. And then there was the smell, an acrid burning smell like someone had melted a plastic plate in a toaster.
He rounded a corner his head looking down at his boots which seemed to be a size too small now and made his feet ache. The floor in front of him changed colour as the light seemed to dim further. The next thing that happened went some way to explaining the odd feeling Sam already had. The thing was mostly in the shape of a mechanical being that stood blocking the hallway, its back to Sam as he almost walked right into it. He pulled up just short and looked up, The twin silver grey cylinders on its back looked like a jump pack however Sam guessed by its size it would take more then a jetpack to lift its arm alone.
This train of thought led Sam to evaluate his own position, on one hand he wanted to know who or what this was, on the other, most of the sensible parts of his body were already screaming to leave very rapidly. As normal the curious out-gunned the already running sensible. Sam stepped to one side and peered round the hulking form, its arm was indeed a mass of shining metal with a small plasma cutter on the end. A blue arc of heat was making short work on one of the repair patches wielded to the door joint. A shower of sparks pooped and exploded like a firework briefly illuminating the Mec. Its front looked even more imposing than the back, and this was enough to set Sams senses to rights. He began to back away slowly.
On the other side of the door a digital readout silently counted down the seconds. Zero hour would be reached in just over four minutes.
Sam made the corner and started to turn back along the corridor His mind was already formulating a plan to get passed the Mec. He could just make his way back to the stasis labs and hope the problem would solve itself but he figured that more action was needed. He slipped into a booth control room and pin locked the keypad on the door. The room was small with a control console located under a viewing window overlooking a row of six stasis tubes. Sam powered up the screen and logged began to log into the ships systems. His ident number took a while to be accepted but soon he was opening a comms link to the drive room. “Hello, is there anyone there? This is First tec Sam Beckett to any persons who can hear me, Hello!” The static over the comms link didn't fill Sam with much hope, he tried a second time repeating the message but there was still nothing in reply just static. Switching ideas he called up holly, “What's going on holl?” Hollys face appeared on the monitor looking worried and just a little flustered. “Ah Sam I was looking for you. What do you know about relative time dilation in deep space?”
Sam looked even more confused than holly,”What, Time dilation? What's that? And who's the new robot crewman, when did we get mecs on-board?”
“No time to explain now have to lock-down the ship stop the spread. Find the others and don't get glooped” Holly disappeared once more.
“yeah thanks hols great help as usual”. Sam considered his options. The thought of waiting there and taking the chance that the other crew left would sort the problems did have a certain appeal but he knew deep down that they would probably need all the help they could get.
Pulling up a schematic of the deck he found an access vent about 50 meters from the mec at the door. This would take him inside the Rec room from where he could make his way out the other side and on to a turbolift. He got up pulled out a multitool and left.
Moments later he was on he's knees opening the vent as the mec finished cutting through the door just up the corridor. He watched as the smouldering metal arch dropped inwards crashing to the deckplates. The smoke cleared in-front of the mec and there was the toaster counting down on a digital readout. Its browning knob was set to medium and the counter was on five seconds. The Mec ignored the toaster and glided into the Rec room.
It was deserted, though from the upturned chairs and half finished meals it hadn't been that way for very long. The toaster silently dropped to three seconds, The mec began to turn surveying the room and Sam scrambled to undo the last screw holding the grate to the wall. Two seconds the mec reached 90 degrees now having its back to the toaster. One second Sam felt the screw give and the grate drop into his hands. He moved it as quietly as he could as the toaster let out a ping. Two strawberry pop tarts jumped up from the toaster and the mec reacted to the noise. Its hulking torso pivoted in back to the toaster as it levelled its arm to the source of the noise. A nano second passed before it spewed a thin stream of greenish gloop from the protrusion covering the pop tarts and the toaster. Sam was frozen waiting to see what the mec would do but poised to dive for the air vent if he needed to. He didn't, the mec paused then turned to the door on the other side of the room and gently glided over to it. There was a beep and the door slid open, the mec passed through and the door closed. Sam stood, all that effort and two wasted pop tarts, he remembered how hungry he was.
He stepped into the rec room and looked about, absently picked up a half eaten sandwich, cheese and pickle not Sam's favourite be what the hell he hadn't eaten in literally ages. He took a bite as he turned to look at the toaster and the trail of gloop leading up to it and the counter it was on. There was a quiet pop then a fizzing sound then it exploded in a shower of sparks and green gloop. A strawberry pop tart slapped Sam on the forehead and slid down finally coming to rest on the half bitten sandwich still in Sam's mouth. The Cheese, pickle and gloop combination really didn't work and Sam spat the contents out over the floor. “What the smeg, Oh I gotta get this off me “ Sam said to no one. The green gloop dripped off his chin and onto his boot.
