Obligatory Exposition
<Just after Brett's rescue by Jay>
<snip> Jay turned to Brett and extended his hand. “Jay Chrysler” he introduced himself. “Fancy a holiday?”</snip>
The two moved quickly through the hallway, even though the rodents seemed to have given up the chase, Jay didn't want to take any chances.
“Uh, Brett, Brett Bishop. Thank you very much for the rescue. Sorry, Jay was it?”
“Yeppers. Jay Chrysler.”
“Ah, well, er, so…….,” Brett didn’t know what else to say. He had barely enough time to think before he met his first alien life form in what looked to be a family of Sea Monkeys, nearly drowned while almost accidentally murdering Papa Sea Monkey, met his second alien life form and almost immediately becoming a meal to them, then being saved by this space jockey.
“You alright there?”
“It’s been a long day.”
“I’ll bet, you have a chance to be filled in by Holly yet ?”
“Sort of,’ he sighed. “6 million years in stasis?”
“Yeah, that’s gotta be a trip.”
“To say the least. What happened after the reactor leak?”
“Now THAT story would just take too long to tell. Listen, a lot of shit just happened down at the sat-resort we’re heading to. We lost a crew member and a few others were really banged-up, so you are not exactly seeing us at our best. If your interested in the ship's history, Holly can provide you the details later”
“Someone DIED at the resort?” Brett didn’t like the sound of this already.
“It’s okay, it’s been dealt with, just letting you know our collective state of minds right now. Which is SUBAR (Smegged Up Beyond All Recognition). But hey, at least you didn’t wake up to nothing, right?
“Right. Heh, heh….heh,” Brett politely faked his amusement.
“So how many of the crew survived?”
“Not many, barely any actually. The radiation spread throughout the ship really, really quickly. You’re lucky to be alive. Where did you get to a stasis room?”
“One of the supply hangers on the 300th level. Food storage.”
“Ahh, that would explain the extra time and shielding you got.” Jay looked Brett up and down. “Why are you soaked by the way?”
“”Well, that particular hanger is now flooded, I had to swim out.” Brett didn’t mention the aquatic Cleaver family just yet, he still needed to ask about the vermin.
“Jeez, well, good work there. Wait, you said food storage? Any chance there were any uncontaminated crates there?”
“Possibly, there was a lot of kelp growing there so I’m thinking the radiation didn’t reach there or it’s long since gone.”
“Kelp? Huh, might be worth checking out after the holiday.”
Brett nodded. “The ferrets were a bit of a surprise though.”
“Yeah, I bet. Millions of years of interbreeding and evolution helped that along. So, you’re the chef?” Jay casually changed the subject.
“Well, A chef.”
“Naw man, THE chef.” They arrived at the lift and rode it to the hangar where Jay parked the Starbug. Along the way and during the engine warm-up sequence, Jay gave Brett a quick rundown on the remaining crew. Brett did his best to keep the names straight, who was human, who was a mechanical, who was a GELF and who was none-of-the-above.
Soon they were on their way to the resort and about to meet the current crew of the Blue Dwarf.
<Tag Crew-Brett has arrived at the resort and is a bit bewildered. A chance for the crew to introduce themselves to the poor guy with the snazzy glasses.>
