Ship in a Bottle
“You know it reminds me of the t’kklaaszi. They have a strange practice of building a miniature ship to fly inside any space ship they build. If the little one crashes, it is a bad omen and they instantly scrap the big space faring vessel.” The holographic man said, moving around a broken light fitting that had fallen from the ceiling. It always made him smile, being a ships AI inside, projected by his ship, aboard another ship.
“You know, it reminds me of the novelty gift back on earth.” Holly said, looking at Kenneth from his monitor.
“Oh?” The AI queried to the AI.
“Yeah, they make them at the seaside, put these tiny boats in glass bottles. People find them pretty, it’s a good gift.” Holly said, nodding sagely.
“Interesting!” Kenneth said, and lapsed into a thoughtful silence as he continued to progress through the dwarf. Holly continued to appear on monitors alongside Kenneth.
“So, dude. What are you doing?” Holly asked, quizzically.
“This?” He said, looking up at the monitor pausing briefly. “I find it easier to scan and map a vessel when I’m upside down.” He said simply, and continued his journey on his hands down the corridor.
“You think my scanners would work better if I flew the dwarf upside down?” Holly asked, there was an ominous lurch in the Dwarf’s momentum as Holly began to adjust course.
“Well, maybe, but it might be worth testing with the artificial gravity off so you don’t damage the humans. They seem quite fragile, they act all tough, but there don’t seem to be many of them left in this universe.” Kenneth said, his palms making little slapping noises as he ‘walked’.
“Yeah. I guess I’ll try it next time they all go on shore leave.” Holly said, the Dwarf returned to a more even keel, engine noise returning to something less strained. Kenneth, didn’t have a great view, and was focused on his balance. Artie had paused in the corridor to perform some minor self diagnosic tests. Neither saw the other. They collided and fell into a tangled heap of holographic and robotic mess.
“Oh. Watch out dudes” Holy said, too late.
“WHATDOYOU thiiiiiiiiiiink you are DOINGYOUINSANE A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.A.AI.” Artie garbled, his face forming into an angry frown as his motors groaned and pulled him free from Kenneth.
“Which one of us?” Kenneth queried, righting himself to a cross-legged position on the floor.
“DOESITREALLllllllyyyyyy matter?” Artie growled, literally growled, his voice modulator malfunctioning into a bestial growling.
“You can emulate the lesser striped zebra fox!” Kenneth, peered at Artie with excitement on his face. “Oh Dr Pritchard, when did you see one? I don’t know anyone else who’s been to Dimention 229876 alpha!” He bounced up and down slightly with a childish glee.
“Noit’snotthat!...!.... MYVOI….oi…OI… OIIIIcE modulator is malfunctioning!”
“Oh, well that should be easy enough to fix.” Kenneth got up and opened a panel on the side of the main body of Artie’s robotic body. He twisted a few wires and poked about a bit. “Try that now.”
