"I know!" Eve said. "Jaxx has done a lot to help some of them. and he just got locked up because of it."
"Not everyone can see it like that." Jamie continued. "Yes, Jaxx is a good fighter. But he seems to just do things for you. I'm always in engineering, so I don't see all of it, but I know that everyone here is hurting right now."
"They think Jaxx killed Katrina..." Eve said, thinking back to what Jaxx had told her.
"No. Jaxx wasn't there, he couldn't have." Jamie said. "Lindstrom did that."
"So why do you think they locked him up?" Eve asked. Jamie hadn't shouted at either of them, or done anything but help, even down to repairing and upgrading the skutter he was stuck in.
"They've all told you, from what I've heard. They think he's dangerous, and only capable of fighting and destroying things. He led the charge against the miners, to protect you. Not to protect everyone, just you. He hurt a lot of people that didn't need to be hurt."
"so you think they're right?"
"I didn't say that. I'm just an engineer. They know him better than I do, so I can only trust what they're doing is right. On Fernandos, the Ssala helped me because I helped them. I fought alongside them against the Haruk. Right now, they don't think he's doing things to help everyone, and that's dangerous. Give them time to calm down, and give Jaxx time to figure this out for himself."
Eve stood still for a while, obviously taking in what had been said.
"While you think, pass me that bag of nails, would you?" Jamie asked, picking up the hammer nearby.

Evelina thought about what Jamie said. She could relate to his point of view a lot easier since she too never knew the other crew members before being put into stasis. The only one she vaguely remembered was Jay when he was just a pilot. He had a reputation as a bad boy, which attracted a lot of the females among the crew. Evelina would have never imagined him as a Captain. Since Evelina had a perfect GELF body never got sick so she never even met the medical crew. It was rather ironic that even though she served with the crew for a long time she only knew a handful of people. She was a bit amused to find out that Dr. Carson who was always hitting on her was part of the MACO project. As Evelina reflected on her past she realized that even though she was designed to be in the spotlight, she had a tendency to blend in with a group instead.

Evelina looked at Jamie and said, “You know when most men and women look at me they see a chance to knock boots.” Jamie smirked and replied, “Really?” Evelina half smiled as she replied, “Yeah I was often confused for a Pleasure GELF on one too many occasions. It was like that since I joined the JMC and was assigned to the Blue Dwarf. I had to deal with jealous women and horny men non-stop. However, when I went to get a transfer from the Captain I met my future mates the “Rowdy Girls”. They were a group of gals who like to have a good time and didn’t fit in either. We hung out and had fun all the time. Who knows how many times the Captain had to reprimand us for drunken disorderly conduct. We were best mates and did everything together.” Jamie listened as he was working on binding his fasteners made of twain.

Then Evelina changed positions to help hold down the wood so Jamie could fasten it better. Evelina continued to say, “The last time I ever saw my mates was right before we were sent to engage the Hymenoptera. My mate Tammy and I were sent to pick up some supplies in an old section of the ship when we were attacked by something. The last thing I remembered was Tammy pushing me into a stasis chamber as I heard her say was that she loved me. As I was frozen in stasis I completely missed out on the Hymenoptera war and the Cadmium leak. It wasn’t till I got back from Fernando’s that I realized my mate Tammy got sucked out into space from a hull breach when she saved me. It was the last day I ever saw my mates again. As for the rest of the present crew I never even knew them.” Jamie asked, “Well it was a big ship, so you most like just passed them in the halls and never noticed them.”

Evelina shrugged as she replied, “Well sort of I guess. I did know of Jay when he was just a flyboy, I avoided him since he was a ladies man and a heartbreaker. But since my body was engineered to be perfect I don’t get sick so I never even knew where the medbay was till I had to take Jaxx there. When I was with my mates we didn’t hang out with the science or mechanic group like Artemis, Jacky or Alex unless they were buying us drinks, but we blew them off when we had our fill so we never caught their names. They were just trying to get us wasted so they could knock boots. It became such a routine I barely knew any crew members that I didn’t work with personally.” Jamie nodded as he replied, “It’s real easy to get into a routine and avoid people.” Then Jamie picked up another piece of wood to bind. Jamie watched from the corner of his eye every now and then Evelina would reveal her legs and cleavage as she moved around.

Evelina nodded as she held the wood down to help Jamie. Even though building wasn’t her thing she felt better when she was busy. Then Evelina said, “I can see why you like building stuff. It is very therapeutic.” Jamie nodded as he replied; “Yeah I always find it relaxing to see a completed project.” Evelina could clearly see the main frame to the hut was complete as they were adding walls now. Eve smiled, as she said, “Not to shabby.” Jamie nodded as he replied, “Thanks for the help. It’s coming along nicely.” Jamie then looked at Evelina as she flipped her hair back over her shoulder and picked up some wood to help Jamie make the walls. Jamie helped arranged the wood in the way he wanted to bind it as he showed Eve the pattern. Then Jamie asked, “So just out of curiosity what do you see in Jaxx?” Evelina thought for a second before blushed as she replied, “Well……..I guess I was attracted to his body. His huge muscles and fins were a big plus for me, but when he talked to me like a person and not a Pleasure GELF I felt connected to him.” Jamie replied, “So it’s a GELF thing?” Evelina shrugged as she replied, “I liked how he looked tough on the outside but was scared and soft on the inside. One thing I liked about him was that he was very kind and helpless since he memory was wiped.”

Jamies switched around to bind from a different angle as he replied, “I see.” Evelina then smiled at Jamie as she said, “Jaxx may act tough in front of you guys but deep down he is always scared.” Jamie stopped and looked at Eve confused as he replied, “What?” Evelina replied, “Well he is always afraid to be seen as weak so he tries to hard sometimes. You guys probably don’t know this but back on Fernando’s after Davie died Jaxx and the Ssala buried him while we slept.” Jamie replied, “We knew he did that.” Evelina replied, “Did you know he had been crying the whole time?” Jamie paused for a moment to see Evelina’s face before he replied, “No that we didn’t know.” Evelina replied, “Jaxx watched helplessly as his mate died right before him. Since then Jaxx became very protective over me since I was his last mate. He went out of his way to avoid bothering the rest of the crew so he could train and get stronger. But deep down he was still scared inside. I remember when I made him watch movies all night I wore a set of sexy thin pajamas to see his reaction.” Jamie looked at Eve in shock and replied, “Why?” Evelina smiled and replied, “I wanted to see if he could control his urges and he did. He eventually focused on the movie and not me and had a good time. But as you know things changed since Jaxx got stuck in a skutter body.” Jamie replied, “Yeah.”

Evelina sadly replied, “I think being in a skutter body made it worse for him since he can’t feel anything. It was hard to tell at first but little by little the joy in his voice became sadder.” Jamie readjusted again and replied, “You could pick that subtlety up on a skutter? Impressive.” Evelina nodded as she replied, “He really had his hopes on getting his body back so we could have a proper honeymoon, but that doesn’t look like its going to happen with Jay and Cass still mad at him. Since we got back he became so depressed he hasn’t left the Tele. Since he doesn’t sleep or eat he has no reason to stop watching the Tele.” Jamie nodded as he readjusted again and replied, “Well I don’t know what is on Jay’s or Cass’s mind but my advice is to just be patient and try to enjoy what you have now. After loosing a ship and a lot of friends and being on Fernando’s for ten years I had to learn to roll with the punches.” Evelina smiled and said, “Thank you Jamie. By the way you might want to stop looking down my shirt since you tied your hand to the wall.” Jamie looked at his hand and sure enough he was caught up in the moment.” Jamie muttered, “Sorry Eve it’s been a while since I was around women, much less pretty ones.” Evelina giggled as she replied, “I know you tend to do that around Miss. Jones too, but I doubt she would find it amusing.” Jamie nodded and replied, “Lets keep that a secret then.” Evelina replied, “Keep what a secret?” Jamie was about to repeat himself until he saw Evelina smile and then he replied, “Exactly. By the way can you hand me my clamps?”
