Coming aboard

JMC Blue Dwarf

The chicken factory had been quite dull as a way-station. Marlene had still
been sulking about the clerical error that had taken her chance at the
position on the Blue Jellyfish; and given her this .... assignment ... on
the Blue Dwarf. A mining ship. How... dull.
She sulked aboard and almost completely ignored the miserable welcome from
the officer who obviously felt he had better things to do at that moment,
such as cutting his toenails.
She sulked to her quarters and tossed her kitbag on the bed. Then she
grabbed a scutter and part-charmed, part-terrorised it into taking her to
the science deck. Once there she sighed in something akin to pleasure as
she breathed in the highly toxic fumes and smells of various acids,
ascorbics, curries and other science related paraphenalia.
She peered critically at several experiments as she passed them by. One of
them had a small valve that was dripping blue fluid onto a glowing green
piece of metal. She sighed, shook her head and fixed it so it didn't drip.
A large crate was awaiting her in the small boxroom that was her office, and
she fell to unpacking with a zeal. Pretty soon a large dot matrix printer
took up most of the desk; and her reams and reams of printout that contained
some of her most important work to date took up the rest. She sat back in
the chair and sighed happily as she picked up a voluminous file on 'H2C3B2y
squared' and began to leaf through it.
Presently, a small explosion ripped part of the science deck apart. "WHAT
THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE BLUE LUBRICATION DRIPS?" a voice could be heard
wailing.
Oblivious to the world, Marlene didn't hear.
