Take Me Instead

Who: Rufus, Amber, Castillo
Where: His Lab,
When: Just after the gravity went.

Rufus looked over his screens as the entire engineering staff and several other decks on the same system began to float. It wouldn’t take long for them to track down the infiltrator to his broken codes, that would be bad. One sight in particular caught his eye as the monitor cycled around a few of the security cameras on the ship, as a geek, Rufus was proud that it was his screen saver.

Amber.

As Castillo’s men threw her into a jail cell on Deck 13, his genius mind formulated a plan. A contingency plan should Rosette fail. It was simple in its idea, but the execution would take a lot of skill, and talking wasn’t his strongpoint.

On his way up to the command deck, Rufus stopped by their parents quarters and left an envelope on the bed. As you could never be sure when Phil would drop in again due to his wibbly, time-dilation, death thing, they were left vacant. He smiled and carried on.

---- The Command Deck ----

Rufus slinked onto the Command Deck, still not sure if this was actually a good idea. Briefly looking around he spied Castillo and approached her.

“C... C... C... Can I h... H... Have a word Capt... t.... tin please?” He said, more nervous than usual. Castillo glared at him and motioned over to her office.

“What is it?” She barked at him, causing him to squirm under her gaze.

“I... I... Wanted t.. To make a d... Deal.” He said, thinking of the future of the JMC being at stake on how this conversation went.

Castillo raised a heavily manicured French eyebrow and made an interested noise. “Go on.” She purred. Rufus swallowed hard and steeled himself for his reply.

“I propose a trade. M... Me for Amber. I... I am of more value to you than her. Rosette likes me and she won’t do anything to put me at risk.”

Castillo looked at Rufus, the unassuming scientist, she’d read his file, like all of the crew, she knew he wasn’t physically a threat, but his intellect was. His walking stick clinked on the metal deck plating as he shuffled his weight and waited for her to say something. Castillo smiled, perhaps it would be best to lock him up where he couldn’t scheme against her. Amber was much less of a threat as long as she was stripped of her rank and access.

“Ok, it is a deal.” Castillo said, smiling at Rufus, “Your sister is free. You are now my prisoner. Guards, take him to Deck 13, let his sister go.”

---- FeBuggure quarters ----

Amber swore under her breath, shooting dirty looks to any of the JMC/Castillo flunkies that walked the decks. She practically punched the door open button on her parents old quarters, seen as she had nowhere else to go, her codes wouldn’t even open her quarters anymore. Castillo had cut her off from everything, she was jobless, homeless and luckless.

Then she saw the envelope sat on the bottom bunk in Rufus and her old room. She gingerly picked it up and recognised her brothers spidery scrawl. Reading the letter, his plan became slightly clearer. She tore up the letter and put it in the garbage disposal chute and ran out of the room towards the Medi-Bay.
