Pancake trains the new guy

Who: Justin Pancake
Where: Blue Dwarf, Engineering
When: After the wormhole Drive caught fire
When Justin arrived in Engineering, it was manic. Everything seemed to be on
fire, and several engineers were rushing around putting the fires out.
Justin helped, and then spent the longest working day of his life trying to fix
the Drive again, including the surrounding machines which were damaged by the
fire. As his work shift was about to come to an end, and he was looking forward
to relaxing in his bunk, Kotchanski approached him with some more work.
"Chief?" Justin asked.
"I've got a new crewman who I want you to train up." He said. "He's not had much
training as an Engineer so I need you to help him quite a bit."
Justin groaned. "Now? But I'm knocking off in five minutes!"
Kochanski looked stern. "No excuses. We're all working overtime!"
Justin scowled and then saluted by slapping himself on the forehead. "Yes sir."
he said with attitude which Kotchanski ignored.
Justin dragged his heels as he walked over to Kotchanski's office where this new
crewman was waiting. He hated training up newbies, they were either enthusiastic
and useless, or stubborn and unwilling to learn.
Justin opened the door to the office. Inside, Jay Chrysler stood there wearing
the dirty overalls of a 3rd level technician. He looked miserable.
A big wide smile grew on Justin's face. "Hello crewman!" He said to Jay. The
ex-captain scowled back.

Where: Corridor 159
When: Few minutes later
Justin walked down the corridor, with a bored-looking Jay Chrysler pushing a
trolly of tools behind him.
"Now Crewman Chrysler, I'm going to show you how to unclog a chicken soup
dispenser." Justin said in his most patronising voice.
"You're loving this aren't you?" Jay spat at him.
Justin ignored the question. "Don't be silly. This is essential routine
maintenance! It's absolutely vital for the well-being of this crew, this
mission, and this ship. Now..." he looked at his clipboard. "Pass me a 14B"
Chrysler looked at the tools in front of him and picked up a small white pipe
cleaner.
Pancake took the implement but then looked down at it. "Chrysler, is this a 14B?
Does it look even remotely like a 14B?"
"I trained as a Pilot. I've got no idea what a 14B is supposed to look like!"
Jay admitted, with clear frustration in his voice.
Justin picks up the correct tool. "This is a 14B, Chrysler." He looked back at
the original. "This is a 14F. Are you blind?!"
"Who cares?" Said Jay. "Soon I'm going to be Captain again, and I won't need to
know this stuff."
"I care, Chrysler!" Pancake said. "I'm your boss now, and I want you to fix all
the soup machines on this deck by this evening."
"How many are there?"
"Eighty seven."
"Eighty seven?! No chance!"
Justin shook his head. "That's not a positive attitude is it?" He said.
