jay on the blue dwarf
who: jay byrd
where: finally on board blue dwarf
when: 45 minutes after he offered pizza to the guards
blue dwarf, like most jmc mining ships, was big. no really big, bigger
than any ship jay byrd have ever even been on. he had been lead down
so many different hallways that he felt like he was in a floating city.
it had all lead to him sitting in a sort of crew quarters. the guards
left and he was told to wait. but what for.
he took a few minutes to let the dust in his brain settle and he begin
to think over what had just happened.
first he was on his shuttle...
then there was this "jmc" thing
then there were these guards...
then there were these halls...
and now there was this room...
it seemed to fit together, or at least well enough that he decided to
think on something else.
he would get up and check out the room. it was pretty bare bones, but
he soon discovered the mirror was also a com-link to the main computer.
"computer?" he said after a moment. it felt a bit odd talking to a
mirror, but he remembered having good convesations with a chair, so
nothing could really be too odd.
after a moment a bald head appeared. "this is holly," 'he' said with a
slightly irrated tone.
"holly?" jay asked raising and eyebrow.
"that's right," the head nodded. "i'm holly the ship computer."
jay took a moment to think this through, he wasn't use to ships having
this level of ai. "so your the ship's central computer?" he asked in
slight disbelief.
"yep," said the head with another nod. "what don't think i'm set up
for the job?"
jay was taken aback by this. an ai with and ego? now that was even
newer. he would shake his head, business first, fun later. and
business was learning about this ship. "so if your the ships
computer... what ship is this?" he would ask.
"well that's easy," said the head. "this is the..." he trailed off as
if he had to think about it. "oh yeah... this is the blue dwarf."
now jay just had to ask. "holly what are your specs?" he asked grinning.
"i dunno," said the head, holly, "maybe a foot?"
jay considered this for a moment. "a foot?" he would ask.
"yeah, "said the head with a nod, "sounds about right..."
jay would sigh. it was quite aparent that he'd get no help from the
computer. "off" he said turning with a wave of his hand.
"off what?" asked holly.
jay glanced around. "what do you mean 'off what?' turn off you bazzare
machine!"
holly seemed to shrug and fad back to mirror.
jay would sit on the nearby bed and sigh. he had no idea what to do,
locked in this odd room, with an odd computer. his thoughts drifted to
elsewhere...
-------------------two hours later------------------------
jay glanced again around the room. several sheets of paper, the desk,
the walls, floor, and bits of the ceiling had everything from doodles
to complex math problems written out in a haphazard sort of way.
what had happened was about 15 minutes into his "waiting" he had
discovered 2 ballpoint pens.
now he had finally run out of ink and he sat to admire his work. he
was just beginning to get bored again when the door slid open.
2 guards walked in and looked around. it was quite insane in the room
and neither could fully understand the whole scene in front of them.
either genius or madness, or something dancing that fine line in the
middle.
jay looked them over. they seemed far to stiff to him, but they were
guards.
after a moment he was instructed to fallow them. they lead him down
another maze of halls and to the medi-bay to be examined. he was being
treated a bit like a prisoner because no one was really sure who or
what he was...
