Rosette - "Special Assignment" part 2
<Continuation from my previous post - "Special Assignment"
The door in front of Rosette opened with a very harsh sound of metal
grinding on metal. In front of her sprawled one of the largest space
stations in the human controlled galaxy. She opened her mouth in awe
at the sight, having never been in atmosphere around Earth before.
"Get a move on!" came an annoyed voice from behind her, pushing her
out into the tube that linked the 'Dwarf and the Space Station. She
gave up on her chance to take in the view, and walked into the main
area of the station, a huge dome with offices and shops everywhere.
Many different socially acceptable aliens wandered around, mostly in
shopping groups. In this huge area, bigger even than the Promenade,
Rosette felt totally out of it. As if her life had done another
backflip, and missed the landing.
"hey, you!" whispered a man in a very conspicuous trenchcoat, urging
her to go to an alley. Tentatively, she walked towards it, keeping
her hands where she'd be able to reach her knives easily. Anyone in
this area was allowed to keep their weapons on them, the fear factor
of the stations security was enough to keep anyone from actually using
them. Hovering turrets patrolled every inch of the station, each one
of them with face recognition and weapon recognition software built
in. Anyone using weapons would be killed in a fantastic display of
rapid-fire cannons.
"Where are you?" she asked, reaching the entrance to the alley.
Further down, the trenchcoated man urged her into the side entrance of
a shady looking bar. Inside, he sat down at a table in the corner,
not much light illuminated the bar as a whole, and this corner was
even shadier than that.
"Who are you?" Rosette asked as soon as they had sat down. she got no
reply from the strange man, nor could she see his face.
"Here. Take this." he said after a short while. He handed over an
envelope and got up, heading for the door.
"Wait!" Rosette called, but he had already gone. Vanished like a
rabbit disappears down a hole. Left with nothing but the envelope,
Rosette opened it cautiously, and looked inside.
"What the..." she said, taking out a letter. Within the envelope sat
a collection of paper, each one coloured green, and with a picture of
the latest and greatest monarchs and inventors on them. She read over
the letter quickly, picking up several things that were in reference
to the 'special assignment' she'd been given.
"Wow. That's alot of money..." she said to herself, pocketing it all.
"Time for a shopping spree..." she said, walking back out into the
station main.
