<snip>
Above, Vanessa had realised her "sister" was missing and had gone
back for her. All she saw was a gap where the ventilation shaft
should have been, and on the other side was a drooling baby.
<end snip>
"STOP!" Vanessa yelled back to Shakespeare and the other patients
"THE BABY!!!"
Shakespeare turned and looked back, spotting the baby on the other
side of the shaft.
"There'st is nay wayeth to cross'eth thine gap!" he said "verily, we
must findeth another wayeth to rescue'st yonder infant!"
"ALOTA!" shouted Vanessa "stay there!!"
Alota burbled happily, and turned and crawled back into the ducts....
Below, Jayne was cornered by the mob, clutching a large bottle of
medicinal alcohol under her right arm, her left hand twitched as it
hovered over her gun holster. She had to get away from the mob
somehow, and rejoin the others, but wanted to avoid hurting anoyne
if she could.
There was another vent covering a shaft further down the corridor,
this one along the top edge of the wall, near the ceiling, she was
pretty sure the mob hadn't spotted it. From the corner of her eye
she noticed a cluster of fire extinguishers against the wall. In a
split second she had drawn her pistol, and fired three rounds, one
into each extinguisher, filling the corridor with gas and foam.
The cloud was thick, and Jayne had lost sight of the mob, and
therefore assumed correctly that they had lost sight of her as well,
so she darted down the corridor, and using a vending machine to
support herself, vaulted feet first into the high vent, kicking the
panel inwards, she quickly scrambled to replace it, in an attempt to
cover her tracks and retreated deeper into the shaft, the angry
shouts of the mob echoing behind her.
Coming to a junction a little further down, the baby Alota gurgling
her way into Jayne's path, she quickly grabbed the baby under her
free arm and proceeded to crouch her way along the corridor.
It wasn't long, before a voice was heard. "ALOTA!!!" it was Vanessa,
calling out to the child...pointlessly...Jayne, followed the sound
and nearly came to her end as her foot slipped over the edge of a
lift shaft, she pulled back and regained her footing and looked
around, she could still hear Vanessa's voice, coupled with the
odd "YON BABYETH!!! WHERE FOR ART THOU BABYETH!!"
"OVER HERE!!" Yelled Jayne, and a moment or two later Vanessa popped
her head out of a vent on the opposite side of the lift shaft.
"Smeg!" she exclaimed "Now what do we do!!"
"Is there another way around?" Jayne asked
"Probably" Vanessa replied "But in a ship this size we could get
lost for days trying to find one.."
"Ok..then, we split up and meet somewhere out in the main ship..say,
hydroponics?"
"See you there!"
"Nay!" Shakespeare interuppted, "Feast thine eyes!" he was pointed
upward, a loud rumble was coming from above and when they looked up
Jayne and Vanessa saw a turbolift hurtling downward..
"Ok...as soon as the lift passes us, we jump on top of it..." jayne
proposed.
"What? Are you crazy?!" Vanessa asked, "you're carrying a baby and
the most precious substance on board, and we've got a woman on a
stretcher and a bunch of other injured people"
"Can you think of a better way?"
"Fair point..."
"Quick, here it comes!!"
the lift passed quickly, and Jayne went first, landing feet first on
the lift's service hatch and kicking it through into the lift.
Vanessa came next, with Shakespeare closely behind, the stretcher
carrying Jenny between them, with Jenny, thankfully, securely
fastened to it.
The others followed shortly after.
They all landed inside the lift, the last people managing to do so
seconds before the lift dropped so far as to be a dangerous drop,
when Jayne spoke.
"Ness, sorry about that..I know that kind of stunt isn't the best
thing for a pregnant woman."
"Er...HI!" said Rufus, who had been standing next to Rosette in the
lift the whole time.
