OOC - Captain Jed Calvert's profile

OOC - Longer than expected, here finally is Jed Calverts biography,
i've added it to the crewroster on BlueDwarf.co.uk so everyone can
see, and changed Phil's status to Executive Officer.
Now about Jed Calvert, i've introduced him as an NPC. He's got a
fairly simple character to get to grips with so that hopefully we can
all use him, and thats what I want - hime to be a generic character
for all use.
I wanted an NPC as a Captain so that we could use him for a lot of
storyline exposition. In recent years the BD storylines have gotten
away from the bridge-oriented stories like Star Trek, Battlestar,
Andromeda, and things like and focussed more on the rest of the crew.
But I think its nice to have a balance, and with a generic character
as Captain we can use him for bridge based storylines whenever we want.
I'll be using him a lot to push the next storyline along, but If
anyone wants to use Jed, go ahead, or talk with me if you're a bit
unsure :-D

Physical Appearance
Jed is a tall lanky man who is a lot stronger and tougher than he
looks. Although he lacks large rippling muscles, Jed makes up for it
with his air of crazed unpredictability. He has been known to fight
hand to hand with men twice his strength but win out of sheer
dastardliness. He has a wizened face that makes him appear a lot older
than his years, which also gives him the rough look of a man who has
been living in the wilderness for years. He shaves less than he
washes, every ice age. Despite hisposition of power as Captain on the
Blue Dwarf, Jed is always seen in a scruffy leather overcoat, ragged
flannel shirts and a cowboy hat. He has a constant grimaced face that
makes it impossible to tell whether he is in a good mood or not, if he
is you'll get a friendly slap on the back, if not you'll get a slap in
the face. With a knife. Jed can always be seen with his hand
laser-pistols, which he carries in two side gun holsters. He is
rumoured to even wear these guns to bed and sleep with a pistol under
his pillow. This is not true, under his pillow he has a loaded shotgun.
Personality and Interests
Jed Calvert has been known to grind his coffee with his teeth and boil
the water with his own rage. When Jed is in a bad mood, everyone on
the ship will be warned to never go near him on fear of death. Coming
from the harsh dessert planet of New Texas, Jed has developed a thick
skin in his attitude to people, and isn't much of a people person. He
has developed the personality of a cowboy on the old Western Frontier,
tough, wild and unpredictable. He speaks in an old fashioned cowboy
slang and in his spare time relaxes on an electronic rodeo horse. It
is far to say that Jed has a take-no-shit attitude to being a starship
captain. He is very strong willed and in negotiations with aliens or
other space dwellers, there are NO negotiations. Jed Calvert does not
go hunting, Jed Calvert goes KILLING. He is not afraid to get down and
dirty on away missions, normally hoping to kill as many people as
possible. Jed takes care of his own, this includes his crew and people
he likes, but ultimately he is a selfish individual out for himself.
He is always looking for a quick buck and searching for any dodgy deal
or trade he can get to better himself. He has a long history of
trading with nefarious characters, with no morals about what he
trades, and doesn't care who he screws over to get what he wants.
Above all, Jed likes to have a good life. He likes a good ol'
thigh-slapping hootenanny where he will drink more moonshine or liquor
as humanely possible. He is never one to hold back, especially in
conversations when he will confidently speak his mind, no matter the
consequences.
History
Jed grew up on the planet of New Texas. From here on his history is
vague, as he has been known to tell a million stories about his life,
and all of them are questionably true. Sufice it to say Jed has lead a
life of smuggling and corruption until he joined the Space Corps,
bribed his way to Captains position, and then furthered his life of
smuggling and corruption – this time doing it on a salary. The events
that lead to Jed becoming Captain of the Blue Dwarf are complicated
and involve time travel. It all started when the Earth was destroyed
by the Hymenoptera, Jed was Captaining the JMC Fools Gold. Instead of
transporting refugees away from Earth, Jed has stocked up on moonshine
to sell for a fortune after the Earth was no more. But Jed's crew
didn't like this and rebelled, leaving him alone and naked on a
dessert planet. Jed soon found a way off the planet, and took a few
odd jobs before finding himself Captaining a ship of refugees from the
destroyed Earth, whose wet and inexperienced crew were in desperate
need of Jed's no-shit Captains skills. Until Jed again faced mutiny by
attempting to use the ship to smuggle some pillaged gold, and found
himself fleeing in a very damaged ship that was leaking lethal
radiation. A dying Jed Calvert then got rescued by the Blue Dwarf as
they were going back in time to save the Earth, allowing Jed to see
persuade his past-self not to make the stupid mistakes he had some in
the past few weeks. Jed, of course being the stubborn man he was
didn't like being told what to do and killed his future self, although
a small amount of conscience did make him change his future. Instead
of fleeing Earth with smuggled moonshine this time, Jed crashed his
ship the JMC Fools Gold into the Hymenoptera mothership and met the
crew of the Blue Dwarf, aiding them in their mission to destroy it.
Jed was made Captain of the Blue Dwarf a few weeks later, having a
personal familiarity of the area of space the Blue Dwarf was being
sent to.
