Are the Doctor and Sherlock Mary Sues?

Doctor and Sherlock

I linked to an article making the case that the Doctor and Sherlock are Mary Sues on our Facebook page yesterday and the reaction was mixed, so I thought it be worth sharing here to guage opinion and perhaps discuss.

I can see where the author is coming from. Both characters are awesome, perhaps too awesome that they’re bordering on superheroes, and don’t have a lot of much-needed flaws. Read More

Does roleplaying canons ruin them?

hermione granger saying "hello I'm a canon character"I saw this discussion on RPG-D recently about roleplaying turn-offs (no not in a sexual way you pervert!). The discussion was about things in a roleplay game, forum or thread that people don’t like (see the thread here), and I saw a comment about canons that I found really interesting & wanted to share. Mr Xanadu’s Inspirational Inspiration

Xanadu CrestThe Xanadu Report

Sometimes it’s hard to come up with a good idea for a post. I for one usually end up writing numerous copies of the same post before actually putting it up (I’ve also got OCD, but that’s for another blog article). Sometimes we can’t post because we’re lost in the stories, other times it’s because real life is draining us, but one of the all time biggest problems is because we have no inspiration. I don’t need to go on a tirade about how essential inspiration is when writing, because you’re all aware of it already.

Expanded Universe: Giving Your Game Depth

Xanadu Crest

The Xanadu Report

If you’re in the Role Playing community, chances are that you’ve encountered expanded universe content before. flagsofTSABe if from your favorite TV show, a movie that you’ve loved your whole life, or a novel you’ve read a few thousand times. In fact, fandom games are part of a franchise’s expanded universe. As a writer, I tend to be obsessed with detail, so much so that for every post I’ve ever written there’s at least a few paragraphs of detail that got left out just to keep it within a sane amount of words (I say sane because my first Blue Dwarf post’s word count would have been up in the tens of thousands if I hadn’t regained my sanity and decided “maybe a novella doesn’t make a good post”, telling an entire life’s story doesn’t really work well). Help! I don’t know what to post!

Frustrated writer

This article was written for us by Amy O’Reilley from Blue Dwarf.

We’ve all been there, we’ve all started a post with “Jeff walked along the corridor and…” then suddenly been struck with an attack of the ‘Oh God what nows?’ Or what happens when you are in the middle of a fight and you have absolutely no idea what to do with third technician Jeff Jefferson who only cleans out the chicken soup machines. Spelling tips – It’s your game they’re looking for

Obi Wan Kenobi

Nothing turns off new players to a game more than a poorly written post.  A misplaced apostrophe could very well send someone in search of a new role playing home away from your sim and to the next. Read More

Good Video Games for RPGs – S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Roughly two weeks ago I published the first in a multi-article series of good video games for RPG’s. This is inspired by Chris’s fantastic article 10 TV shows that could make good roleplaying games. What makes a good story in a video game may not make a good story when you have half a dozen people trying to carve out their own legacies within this world. Don’t set your world in stone

This article was written by Katie who runs Elenlond, a free-form fantasy RPG.

octopus city

When I first started play-by-post roleplaying, people just made things up as they went along. The websites where these threads took place had a roleplaying subsection with little else—there weren’t any pinned topics about races, countries, or social hierarchies. Read More

Meta-gaming is Good

sarcastic wonkaThis article was written by Crimsyn from the USS Portland in Obsidian Fleet.

Meta-gaming is good

There, I said it.

I say this a lot, whether I’m playing tabletop games or play-by-post RPGs. And when I do, I’m invariably met with blank stares. After all, since Gygax first met the d20, it’s been common knowledge in the role-playing community that meta-gaming is one of the greatest sins that a player can commit. Read More
