Chas Hammer is awarded the OWCH

The OWCH awardI’d like to inform everyone that Chas Hammer, a member of our Board of Advisors, has resigned and decided to move on with his career. Chas joined us earlier this year in March when OngoingWorlds and the Simming League merged. During his seven months on the board, Chas has been an invaluable asset to us all. With that in mind, I now present the second Ongoing Worlds Community Honor to Chas Hammer for his service on the Board of Advisors and for hosting SciWorld 2012.

Congratulations! Read More

Announcing Way Back When Week

Way back when week

Way Back When Week  is a week event where writers and roleplayers are encouraged to write a story depicting their characters ancestors, and the similarities and differences between past and present.

This will be a good exercise to get inside your character’s past and see their ancestors, and perhaps show where they got that certain personality trait, or where they got their interests from. Did their ancestors share a certain genetic trait, or perhaps an important ability. If you’re not familiar with thinking in such detail about your character’s history, give this a go, it’s only for a week! If you’re used to exploring your character’s past, you might have some ideas already, here’s your excuse to write it!

Way Back When Week will take place between the 25th of November – 1st of December Read More

Member Izzy publishes book "Simply Complicated"

simply complicatedOngoingWorlds member Izzy and GM of the popular game “What will be, will be…” has published a book, making her the first published member (I published a story in an anthology but I’m not sure if that counts). Here’s the blurb of her short story:

Do you ever feel unloved? As if everyone around you was oblivious to your pain, and wish only that someone could hear your silent screams? Phoenix Hudson does. Her best friend, Juniper, has suffered from depression and various other mental conditions since the age of ten, and it has always been Phoenix’s job to stay strong for her, allowing her own mind to suffer. But now Phoenix has noticed a new guardian angel in her life. Will the love she feels make or break her fragile soul? For more about books go and check this.

I asked Iz what made her want to publish a story and where she got her inspiration and encouragement. Read More

Give your members an award for taking part in First Person Fortnight

I’ve been encouraging roleplayers to take part in First Person Fortnight, just for something a bit different, and after writing in first person myself I realised how difficult it can be! So I thought it’d be great to reward members who are joining in with an award.

I’ve already given members of my game (Blue Dwarf) a special award for taking part, and I think it’d be great if other GMs and moderators did the same too!

If you’re not sure how to give an award, I’ve recorded this video to show you how!

Wreckage: A survival roleplaying game

Wreckage

David

I’m always glad when I see a new game created on OngoingWorlds, and I especially like the bespoke games with a very stand-alone story. A story created recently that looks extremely promising is Wreckage, created by Mike, who recently wrote some articles for this blog. Stand-alone games (and I mean games that aren’t based on an existing franchise like Harry Potter, Star Trek etc) are often tough to get started because it can be difficult to attract players, but are great because you’ve got complete freedom over the world and characters, and Mike’s game has made a brilliant start at creating a gripping story.

I asked Mike 3 questions about his game, and here’s what he wrote:

Roleplaying Focus – Should a GM Make Player Characters Die?

Leon Archer, GM of Spellbound

Leon Archer, GM of Spellbound

Hello everyone! I am Leon Archer, also better known as Phantasmagoria on Ongoing Worlds. I’m the creator and GM for the popular game Spellbound as well as a few various other little projects I shall be working on over the next few weeks (Shameless Advertising :D)

Right, I am hoping that this will be one of many articles I will be writing on the Ongoing Worlds’ blog. It’s my little bit I’m calling Roleplaying Focus. Every couple of weeks I’ll be writing up on various techniques used by myself and my fellow roleplayers to create interesting games, creative characters, and entertaining players.

Today’s topic is about death. Not the existence of an afterlife sort, mind. No, I’ll be discussing about killing off player’s characters in-game.

  • Is it a bad thing or a good thing?
  • Should players ever die as a consequence of their actions?
  • Can killing a player be used a powerful storytelling tool? Read More

What will be… hits 200 posts (and shows no sign of stopping)

DavidOne of the most successful games on OngoingWorlds is What will be, will be… created by Izzy Stuart, it was the first game to reach 200 posts (and as it’s taken me a while to publish this article – it’s now well on its way to 300!), and has been running for 9 months. I asked Izzy the creator and GM, some questions for this article.

Izzy

Izzy created the game 'What will be, will be...' in June 2011

In What will be, will be… there has always been a lot of drama! With the first section introducing us to characters such as Evangeline Turner, the nervous young girl, who finds herself diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, to Natalie Sans, a girl living in a foster home with an abusive carer. The section sees Evangeline’s situation with her aneurysm through, whilst looking into the lives of surrounding teachers and students who find themselves all wound up in it all. The next section expands more on the lives of students from all round the school, with everything from high school dates and dances, troubled students doing crazy things, to illnesses, pregnancies, fires, and much more! The third section was kick-started with the anticipation of the Halloween dance, as well as the two expecting mothers within the school. Read More

Matching Your Character Up For A Game

DavidWhen you join a game do you create a character to match the world, or do you start the other way around – create a character and find a game to match them to? This article is written by Ellen, (aka TotallyAwesome from RoleplayHub). Ellen has been roleplaying for over 15 years and is a regular member on Harry Potter RP ‘Vault 713’.

Ellen

Ellen has been roleplaying for over 15 years

So, you’ve got your favorite character and you can’t imagine ever *not* playing him or her, but your RP site starts to get a little lack-luster, or maybe goes in a direction you’re not liking. What do you do? You’ve got this sixteen-year-old, shy, gay, Jewish Ravenclaw, who’s dad is a professional broom designer, and you want to take him to a site where Neverland is real, or Rita Repulsa is back with a vengence, or there’s a sudden dyer need to get to the fountain of youth. I think I have your solution.

Bringing characters from site to site is easy, once you know how to do it. You can take any character from any site and change certain things about them so that they fit into the new surroundings. Read More
