Flashback week 2013

Flashback week - write and roleplay about your character's past

Flashback Week is a week-long writing event where writers and roleplayers were encouraged to think about something that happened in their characters past. The event doesn’t have a physical location, there’s no fee, and there’s barely any rules – only to write a flashback about your character and your story and tell everyone about it. Oh, and to have fun! There’s also a competition for the best flashback story (see below).

The competition is now closed. The winner was announced here. Read More

Some alien inspiration from “Alien August”

Alien august

If you’re roleplaying in a scifi universe, it can be a challenge to keep coming up with interesting aliens & creatures, especially if your characters are encountering new ones every week. The website SciFi Ideas has plenty of interesting concepts to choose from or inspire you to invent your own. This month especially they’re dubbing “Alien August” and publishing at least one interesting alien profile every day. Here’s a few of the best that might inspire you in your own story. Read More

Alien August wants to highlight your best aliens – The Laudeans

Alien august

SciFi Ideas is a blog dedicated to publishing cool scifi ideas, concepts and aliens to get those creative juices flowing. A very valuable resource for scifi writers! This month they’re running an event called Alien August (more info here), where they’ll be publishing interesting alien profiles that have been submitted, for example here’s some they’ve published already.

As roleplayers we have to come up with new ideas all the time, and if you’re a roleplayer in a scifi game you might already have some aliens you’ve already invented, which might be worth submitting to SciFi Ideas, if published it’ll attract attention to your roleplay and might even get you some more players.  Read More

Stick your face in a cake for Moderator appreciation day

It wasn’t widely announced, but Monday was Moderator appreciation day. I completely forgot until the night before, so didn’t make much of a big deal about the day itself apart from a meek message on our Facebook & Twitter.

Kim from RPRepository put up a fantastic message, thanking all forum moderators. She’d even baked a cake, which she proceeded to stick her face into. Seriously! Watch this:

SciWorld online convention for roleplayers coming soon

SciWorld celebrate roleplayingHi roleplayer dudes! At the start of May there’ll be an online chat event for all us roleplayers called SciWorld. SciWorld isn’t a new thing, it’s been a yearly thing for 10 years, and last year OngoingWorlds had the amazing opportunity to sponsor it, which meant I banged on about it enough to bore you all into a coma! But as it happens, it was all worth it, because it was an amazing event, and loads of roleplayers all got together for a chat, shared ideas, got to know new people, and generally had a good time.

This years will be happening on Wednesday May 1st – Friday May 3rd. So that’s a 3 day convention. What’s best (In my opinion) about SciWorld is it’s a convention you can attend in your pyjamas. It’s completely online, and takes place in a chatroom.  Read More

Announcing the Squiddie awards – The winners

Squiddie award for superior online roleplaying

Now that the Oscars are out of the way, it’s time to present the real awards, the Squiddies! The Squiddies (officially the OngoingWorlds medal for superior online roleplaying) are our own award for roleplaying excellence, where we invite all roleplayers to nominate their games, clubs and fellow roleplayers for an award. Nominations were given to us by a form on an article published back in January (we postponed our event to not conflict with SimEnc’s Simming Prize). We announced the nominations last week, and our judges have been working diligently to reach a consensus on the winners.

The competition was fierce as we received nominations for 19 individuals, nine sims/games, and six clubs. Read More

Nominations for the Squiddies

OngoingWorlds Medal for Superior Online Role Playing

It was the Oscars last night, and the week before we had the BAFTAS, and before that were the Golden Globes. Awards ceremonies recognising the best of cinema. Roleplayers and roleplaying games deserve awards too, and just like movie awards, these also come at once. SimEnc announced their awards last week, and we’re also going to award our “Squiddies” in the coming week.

But for now, how about I tell you who the nominations are? Read More
