So you want to kill a character…

Roleplay character jumping off a cliffA while ago I began asking roleplayers about killing off their characters, why and how they did it, and what the consequences were. The death of a character can have widespread consequences for the rest of your game, both the story and the other characters, as Sarah from RPGRating explains… Read More

Tib’s Corner – Interview with David “Onion” Ball

Just the Tib's Corner Logo, mediocre, I know

Hey everyone! Tib here with Tib’s Corner’s first interview! Our first interview is with no one other than the Ongoing Worlds creator, Dave Ball, AKA Onion. Dave Ball is not only the site’s creator, but the creator of Blue Dwarf itself. I had the chance to talk to Dave with a short interview, and here’s what I found out about the creator!

Q: When did you decide to make a fan-fic based off of the BBC comedy “Red Dwarf”?

A: It was when I was at college, I spoke with a friend who first had the idea of creating an ongoing “game” where you send email between members to continue the story with each email. Read More

How to be a good moderator

Angry teacher

I cannot, for the life of me, remember quite where, but somewhere, someone once said, “Hey, someone should write a blog article on being a good moderator.” No-one did, to my knowledge. And, yes, I know that I might not be the best moderator in the world (or on the website) but this is my opinion of what’s right and what’s not. Sort of. Read More

4 websites all roleplayers should know about

RPG DirectoryRPG-Directory.com

RPG-D is a social network for roleplayers. There’s a directory section where you can place an advertisement for your game, which will slip down the list over time, so it’s worth coming back once a month to bump it back up to the top. You can do this by simply writing “bump” or anything tbh, but I find this a bit tacky, so what I do is write a short summary of events that’s happened since the last time I posted, which is much more interesting to read, and useful for any users reading the advert. What I usually do is copy the summary from my game’s featured story summary. RPG-D also has a popular discussion forum where you can discuss all aspects of roleplaying with other interested roleplayers. Read More

How to celebrate your RP events with activities & prizes

Happy 3rd Birthday to Before the Mast

This article was written by Elena Vasilescu.

My site, “Before the Mast”, has just turned three years old. In a world where many RPGs are created on a whim, going belly up before their half year anniversary, each new year a RPG is marking is a reason for celebration. Therefore, anniversary celebrations, events of all kind and prizes are the subject of my present article.

I had seen, on resource sites, several people asking “my site’s first anniversary is approaching. How should I celebrate it? What can I do?” Read More

RPG Rating: Provide a standard rating for your game

RPG ratingA while ago I asked Sarah Carney the creator of the RPG Rating system for an interview. Because I’m an idiot I forgot to publish the article, & it wasn’t until Sarah emailed me a year later (almost on the exact same date – freaky!) that I realised I hadn’t published it. So here’s the interview!

To give you a bit of background info, RPG Rating is a universal rating system which comes as a little graphic you can add to your site to display the levels of bad language, sexual content or violence the game allows. Sarah’s created a snazzy website at rpgrating.com where you answer a few simple questions and can get your own graphic. Read More

How to: Remove a member and adopt their character

Adopt a roleplay character

Did you know that characters in OngoingWorlds can be adoptable? Here’s a scenario:

A person joins a game, and creates a fantastic character. Lets call him… Bob. Pegleg Bob who’s a dwarf. And a pirate. (the name or description isn’t important btw, I’m just adding colour to a boring example!). Read More

Maintaining a creative atmosphere and inspiring players

Greir Reinard from Starbase 118

This article was written by Amy Drysdale who plays Greir Reinard from Starbase 118

The roleplaying games that stand the test of time are those that can maintain a creative atmosphere and keep their players inspired. There are times when a mission seems to stall for one reason or another and posting rates seem to drop. If left unchecked the game’s players will start to get bored and eventually leave. There are several things that can be done in-game and as a group to keep players interested and inspired in the long term.

It all begins with mission planning and looking at the crew and the strengths they have. By thinking hard about players’ capabilities it is possible to find more creative and interesting ways to include them in missions. Read More

5 steps to world domination: How to create your own sim

Nathan Fillion, Mal Reynolds in Firefly

Nathan Fillion (image: Gage Skidmore)

Blame Nathan Fillion. That’s what I do.

I’ve created a good number of sims for my club (Phoenix Roleplaying) and elsewhere over the years; including some original concepts that I have covered in a previous article.

In this post, I will be covering some more general points about sim creation, focussing in particular on Kvant, the Simulation Cup winning Firefly sim that I created for Phoenix in 2011. I’ll give you a description of that sim to help you get the idea:

The Eagles of Warsaw are an elite mercenary group who travel the ‘Verse, tackling ruthless pirates, vicious Reavers… and rabid music fans. Read More
